The history of Mudras

"The mudra is a seal that unleashes joy."

Mudras are sacred hand gestures that date back to Vedic India.

The history of Mudras

Mudras, the sacred hand gestures, have a rich history that is deeply rooted in Hindu tradition, dating back more than 3,000 years according to the sacred texts, the Vedas. The term itself, derived from Sanskrit, is made up of two significant parts: ‘Mud’, meaning joy or happiness, and ‘ra’, meaning to trigger. The practice of Mudra is often referred to as ‘finger yoga’. This expression reveals the ancient understanding that our hands can be powerful channels for channelling energy. Each finger is associated with specific meridians, and by combining the positions of the fingers, we guide the flow of energy through the body.

Mudras have their place not only in meditation and yoga, but also in traditional Hindu dance. These hand gestures are not simply physical postures, but means of symbolic communication, telling the story of the manifestation of divinity in the universe. Each Mudra carries a profound meaning, often linked to mythological stories and spiritual teachings, and it is estimated that there are around a hundred Mudras, each with its own intention and its own influence on vital energy. At our fingertips lies an ancient wealth, a silent language that transcends time and communicates with the depths of our being.
